FY2016 JAXA/EORC Water Cycle Workshop Report

JAXA is promoting applied research aimed at solving problems through the comprehensive utilization of satellite data, drawing on a cross-disciplinary approach that integrates multiple technical fields, including modelling and data assimilation technologies, as well as satellite data analysis techniques.

The “Water Cycle and Water Resources” research group is conducting research that combines satellite observation data and numerical models in order to estimate key physical quantities relating to the water cycle and water resources (e.g. precipitation, river discharge and soil moisture), and to provide easily accessible information such as hazard indicators.

We held this workshop to promote the wider use of the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) system. The aim was to foster mutual communication between developers and users, and to bring the two groups closer together. This time, the focus was particularly on quantitative accuracy.
