The Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS) is an group consisting of meteorological satellite operating organizations and Earth observation satellite operating organizations around the world, and also the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (IOC-UNESCO) as representatives of users of meteorological satellites. From Japan, the JMA, which operates meteorological satellites, and JAXA, which operates Earth observation satellites, are members of CGMS.
The roles of the CGMS are, through strengthen cooperation between multiple international satellite operating organizations and user communities, to 1) coordinate the continuation of observation systems, 2) improve the quality of observation data through mutual comparison, 3) support users around the world, 4) share observation data among participating organizations, and 5) coordinate to develop satellite data application technologies in specific fields. JAXA has been contributing to CGMS activities by providing data from the Global Change Observation Mission – Water “SHIZUKU” (GCOM-W) and the Global Precipitation Measurement/Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (GPM/DPR), and developing data application technologies as well as coordinating future satellite projects.
